Quick Look at Water Resistant Gloves From Husky

While I love these gloves…I have to give them away : ( Unfortunately these are too big for me so I will be handing them over to my husband. However I wanted to test these gloves against basic water penetration.

The gloves are marketed as a “water resistant” glove. So, although I have not used them out on the property because of their size, I can offer a little insight about their water resistance.

They really are water resistant. I have worked with wet gloves many times in the past and can attest to how slimy a raw-hide glove can become in wet conditions. These gloves have gone through water repellant treatment during the tanning process which keeps the water from penetrating the pores.

I soaked these gloves under the sink a number of times and the water simply beads up on the surface. It beads and rolls off the material the same way water rolls off a nicely waxed vehicle.

After soaking each glove under a constant stream of water for 3 minutes, neither of the gloves showed any signs of water penetration. From an overall standpoint these gloves are made really well, the stitching is tight, and the glove feels soft enough to be comfortable while working.

Nitty Gritty Sanding Pads! Check out these new SandNet pads by Diablo.

I’m sure happy to see these types of sanding pads hit the U.S. market. I was first introduced to them when I visited Europe last year and got to use some in a friends shop. This is a net-type sanding pad for orbital sanders. The one’s we’re looking at today are the Diablo SandNet Discs and they’re just as good as the types I used across the pond earlier in the year.

The advantages of a net sanding net pad is that it clears sawdust really well, it keeps the temperature of the material much lower than conventional sand paper and the dust collection (DC) can move air through it very easily.

This package of pads comes with a coarse Velcro adapter pad which is really smart in my opinion. I have wrestled with other manufactures sanding pads that do not include the adapter pad and they simply do not stay coupled to the sander like they’re designed to. It’s frustrating. The Velcro adapter does have clearance holes for the DC as well.

Aluminum oxide is used as the abrasive material and it seems to hold to the net really well. Diablo claims one of these SandNet pads last 10 times longer than conventional pads. I haven’t measured it out exactly in those terms but I can tell you this thing is lasting noticeably longer on this address posts I’m in the process of building.

The material removal rate on these pads is really staggering. I see the conventional sanding pads getting clogged up all the time. What starts out as 80 grit abrasion turns into 220 fine grit real fast just because the paper simply can’t clear the debris. These porous net pads are able to remove much more volume of dust compared to standard pads and when it’s necessary, clearing them with an air hose is noticeably easier.

Last thing worth sharing: Since this thing is basically a net, you don’t have to concern yourself with aligning the DC holes in the pad to the holes on the orbital sander. I know it’s a small detail, but it is kinda nice just being able to throw that sucker on and go.

That’s all I have for you on this one folks! Thanks for stopping in to learn more. This review is sponsored by The Home Depot Prospective Campaign. If you’re interested in getting your hands on some of these cool sanding nets, consider using this link or one from above. Sales through these affiliate links provide a small kick back to me which helps this website continue on. Either way I appreciate you stopping by.

How to Build a Chicken Coop – Part 1

You may not believe it if I told you but a chicken coop is by far the most requested build I get from my audience through email or the comments section of YouTube and Instagram. Coincidentally, my chicken-farming neighbor asked what I thought of building a coop on their property to house their 27 chickens.  Although I’m not really much in the business of building for others, I do love my neighbors and thought “what the heck….let’s do it”.  After we got through a couple of design discussions, I built a 3D model using a CAD software and hit the ground running. Check out the video below if you’re interested in seeing how the first of three build videos came together.

A Close Look at The Diamond Metal Cut-off Blade by Diablo

The only cut-off wheels I’ve ever been exposed to are the conventional composite wheels made from the usual suspect materials: Aluminum Oxide, Silicone Carbide, or Ceramics. Standard composite wheels are known for 2 distinct things in my life: they get used up very quickly and they can explode on you without notice if they’re damaged even a little bit.  This diamond cut-off wheel from Diablo is said to be “100 times” more long lasting and, since its made from steel, it’s much less likely to blow up on you.

The wheel I’m sharing with you today is the Diablo Diamond Metal Cut-Off Blade….objective word: “Diamond”. You probably already know by now that diamond is one of the hardest materials on the planet and is incredibly durable. Diablo has introduced this steel blade with an outer rim coated in small chunks of diamond material for the purpose of cutting through nearly any ferrous material you can throw at it. It can also chew through aluminum quite easily.

Diablo claims this wheel will last 100x longer than conventional cut-off wheels. That’s quite a tall statement that I hope to realize fully in the future. For now, I can tell you that the cut quality has not changed since I’ve owned it over the past couple of months using it intermittently on some steel projects.

This wheel weighs in at 97g compared to the feathery 40g aluminum-oxide wheels I’ve used in the past. I’ve noticed the difference in the weight of the wheel by how smooth my grinder behaves. The lighter A.O. wheel likes to hop around and “cam-out” of the cut line way more than this blade which is a good thing for me. I also notice that the added mass really helps to soak up vibrations much better than the composite ones.

Surprisingly, the kerf of the wheel is actually narrower than my standard wheels I am used to. The Diamond wheel comes in at .058” compared to .065”. This small margin doesn’t mean much to me but it may mean something to someone out there in the ether.

For me, conventional cut-off wheels are scary little creatures. They spin their butts off at a ka-gillion RPM (fact), chunk sparks like the 4th of July, and they have an unpleasant tendency to explode under the right conditions.

How many times have you dropped your grinder with a conventional wheel attached and thought to yourself “oh well….hope it doesn’t come flying apart at 11,000 RPM from the crack I may or may not have just caused.”? This is a common problem with conventional wheels and is exactly why the right protective gear is necessary when using a grinder. Seriously, a grinding or cutting wheel does not care which way its pointed when it explodes so please handle them with care….slow and steady. For me, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and a face-shield are a minimum for staying safe around these angry shop tools…like this guy:

How does all that verbiage relate to this wheel? Unlike the hard packed crystal structure of conventional wheels that are prone to cracking and failing catastrophically, this wheel is made from a chunk of steel that is much less likely to fly apart on you. This point alone should resonate very well if you’ve ever been around die or angle grinders very much.

If you compare it to other wheels that are on the shelf, you may initially think twice based on the 15 dollar price point compared to the conventional ones at $2.50. But, this wheel not only outlives the conventional wheels, but has more than enough going for it to justify the cost. It’s much less likely to explode (good thing..lol), the additional weight makes it very smooth and controllable, and it doesn’t get smaller as you use it.

I thank you for stopping by to learn more about this Diamond Cut-Off Wheel from Diablo. This review was created for The Home Depot ProSpective Campaign. If you are interested in buying one of these diamond wheels feel free to use this link or one above. Theses are affiliate links which offer a small kick-back to me which I use to help fund this webpage and I appreciate the support in this way.

Thank you again for dropping by and have a great day.

Check out the Cordless Band Saw from DeWalt!

Step away from the hack saw…..go on, put it down. Believe it or not but you may very well throw rocks at your hack saw after using this light little cordless band saw from DeWalt. I’m not sure how long DeWalt has been in the portable band saw business but I am sure happy to get my hands on one of these through this Home Depot ProSpective Campaign. Here’s my take on it:

The first thing you notice about it when you take a hold of the cushy pistol grip is just how light and compact this thing is. It weighs in at 10.25 lbs and is just under 15-1/2” long. The handle is placed right between the motor and battery making it really well balanced and easy to maneuver.

If you’ve ever been in an attic in the middle of summer or even under a dark house cutting PVC or conduit you know very well how frustrating and exhausting a hack saw can be. And whether it’s a hack saw or even a reciprocating saw, you don’t always have the room needed to operate them well. That’s where the sompact size of this tool really comes in handy.

This little dude cares not about what type of pipe, plastic, or metal you’re cutting and makes quick work of anything 2-1/2” and under. Electricians would really benefit from this saw since they can easily reach for one tool whether they’re cutting uni-strut, conduit (EMT, IMC, and PVC), or even solid all-thread. This little port-a-band can handle it all.

The trigger on this saw is either on or off and is not variable as you might see in other models. It features a small LED working light above the workpiece that shines a nice clear light on the cut line. The trigger is protected by a trigger release so there is no worry of accidentally depressing it while it cruises along in a tool box. This saw also features a tool-less blade adjustment and blade changing making it easy to install and fine tune the blade tracking of the saw.

I think this little saw has a place in nearly everyone’s shop, garage, or work truck since you can basically use it almost anywhere you may think to reach for the hack saw…(almost). The portable band saw may be one of the coolest inventions to come into the hand tool theatre in a long time. Advanced battery technology makes owning one of these a real treat since they can go for so long without needing a recharge and they’re much lighter than the old led-acid batteries. If you’re in the market for one of these little saws, consider using this link or maybe the one above.

Aside from my appreciation for you just dropping in to read this content, I also appreciate any and all sales through these links.

Y’all take care and have a great day – April

Build A Hook On Balcony Desk

By now you’ve probably learned that I LOVE being outdoors in the elements. This idea was born out of my love for sitting outside on the balcony while drinking coffee and working on the computer. Although we have a couple tables out on the porch, this little “hook-on” balcony desk is the real deal. I can easily move it from one spot to another depending on where the wind is blowing from, if the sun is in my eyes, or if there happen to be a lot of deer on the west side of the house in the evening. All and all I think there are many others who could benefit from this little design. If you haven’t already, check out the video down below.

How To Build Custom Walking Cane

Well my Dad finally went through with his knee surgery to replace a broken down knee joint. Thank goodness! Before he went into surgery I decided to make a custom walking cane out of some scrap material I had on the lumber cart. I went back and forth on material types but settled on a combination of Walnut and Padauk with an Oak center. I really love the way that it came out….and so does Dad. If you haven’t already, check out the video link below to see how the project came together.
